"Give Kids A Chance" is the official theme for District 9980.

In 1995 then District Governor Derek Bulman met Community Leaders to discuss ways in which Rotary could make a real difference in the community. Discussion revealed that good parenting skills and appropriate role-models were essential to ensure a good start to life. Michael Guest, a Dunedin barrister and solicitor and a member of the Roper Committee on Violence (1987), cited compelling evidence that if children are provided with a safe, caring, and educational environment at home, then the likelihood of them becoming a well-adjusted, contributing member of society is quite high.

As a result, Derek proposed that all Rotary Clubs in District 9980 focus on programs to assist youth and the family unit, under the theme "Give Kids a Chance". This was adopted as a permanent challenge for the District.
