Background

I was employed from 1991 to 1995 as a Lecturer in Mining Engineering at the Western Australian School of Mines, Kalgoorlie ( a School of Curtin University, Perth ) and at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. During this time I taught undergraduate courses including Mining Methods ( Surface and Underground ), Open Pit Optimisation, Mine Design, Mineral Economics, Material Handling, Hydrology and Site Rehabilitation. I also developed strong opinions on what constitutes good education for personnel in the minerals industries.

I strongly believe that my broad knowledge of mining combined with my mixed academic/industrial background provides the ideal qualifications for effective teaching in the minerals industry, and I am therefore happy to make my services available for undergraduate teaching on a contract basis.

Capability

I can present undergraduate Mining Engineering courses in the following areas on a modular basis:-

Other courses, including hydrology, mineral economics, and site rehabilitation, can be presented  if required, though I do not consider myself as having specialist knowledge in these areas. My preference is to teach entire courses on a pre-planned modular basis, but I may also be able to teach parts of courses at shorter notice, providing there is no conflict with my primary retained consultancy commitments.

The quality of my teaching has been highly rated in formal assessments and by informal student appraisals throughout my academic career. In addition to University teaching I also have experience in industrial instruction and facilitation, through development and delivery of technical and safety / regulatory focussed courses, including those in preparation for managerial certificates of competency. I continue to enjoy the teaching experience, and would welcome any inquiries regarding technical instruction in any relevant form.

I am also  happy to provide advice on issues of mining related course and curriculum development, for both industrial and academic environments.
