HOW TO MAKE THE BEST USE OF THE
AUDIO-VISUAL GRAMMAR LADDER TO THE MAORI LANGUAGE OF TODAY'S
SPECIAL MODULE
ON THE MAORI LANGUAGE OF THE COOK ISLANDS
In fact, you can think of the Demonstration Mode of this Module as being
the Preliminary Lessons for each level of interactive exercises in this
elementary Cook Islands Maori Language resource. Each exercise at Level One
in Demonstration Mode will present you with
a set of ten fairly simple Rarotongan sentences (one at a time)
together with their translations.
And here is the really good news: you can view the Rarotongan sentences
on screen alongside both the English version and the New Zealand
Maori version simultaneously if you wish. If you have some knowledge of New Zealand
Maori, this trilingual approach can be surprisingly efficient at
giving you rapid insight into how sentences are constructed in the beautiful
Maori Language of the Cook Islands.
Although the Cook Islands Maori Module is not part of the audio-visual
section of the "Grammar Ladder" and just presents the exercises on the Cook Islands Maori Language on screen in print, this is no problem
because the pronunciation of Cook Island Maori is very similar to that of
the Maori Language of New Zealand, and the module contains a note
on Cook Islands Maori pronunciation and some explanatory details on the
phonetic differences between the two languages.
Prospective "Grammar Ladder" users will appreciate that the Maori language of
New Zealand and the Maori Language of the Cook Islands are very similar
in sound, structure and vocabulary. Speakers of New Zealand Maori can
often understand some Cook Islands Maori speech without having studied
the language, and many Cook Islanders learn the New Zealand Maori Language
easily and quickly.
On the other hand, if your knowledge of the Maori Language of New Zealand is
not yet all that strong, you have the
As soon as you feel you are beginning to follow the Rarotongan, try running
the program at the same level in Interactive Mode. Whenever you
encounter a sentence that you do not understand while running the program
in the Interactive Mode, just press [Enter] or [Return] to request help,
and a translation will then immediately appear on screen.
When you are running the program in Interactive Mode
your computer will watch how many of your translations correspond with
its own translations and will count the number of times you request help.
The computer will report back to you at the end of each run of ten
sentences by making various recommendations, including when to move on
to a higher level.
At that point, it is important to follow the computer's recommendations.

Sometimes, the computer may advise the user to go back to
Demonstration Mode on the same level. Sometimes, the computer may advise
the user to return to an earlier level. Please note:
this will only occur in cases where earlier lessons appear to need
further consolidation.
The Cook Islands Maori Language practice exercises can therefore be run to
really good effect many times over by students whose knowledge of the language can be assisted
by practice at any of the levels drilled by this disc.
