Detailed Information on the Maori Supplement (NGAA AKORANGA KOA) Programs

1) MAORI BILLION. For secondary school students and others in their FIRST THREE YEARS of the language (and beyond!), this very user-friendly program makes an indefatigable tutor and study companion. Operating with a choice of TWENTY different levels of difficulty to suit the student's current state of knowledge, the program can create over TEN BILLION different model sentences of Maori with or without translation, as the user prefers. The sentences are built up from a relatively small vocabulary, as appropriate for students in their first few years of Maori. When the student runs the program in non-translation mode to test progress, MAORI BILLION constantly offers to translate any sentence which is not fully understood and monitors the student's progress in this respect over each run of ten sentences. The program then makes various recommendations. In short, it is almost as good as having a real live tutor or two in your own home! If every sentence of Maori which this program can generate were printed out, the print-out paper would go right around the world! Kia aawhiotia ngaa pito o teenei ao nui e te reo Maaori!
2) MBILTRAN. This program generates random ENGLISH sentences at pre-selected levels for translation INTO Maori (from a range of over a BILLION possible different sentences). Every time the student keys in a Maori sentence identical with the model translation generated by the computer, it plays a few notes of music in acknowledgment. When the student's Maori differs from that of the computer, the programmed translation appears on screen for the student to make comparisons. Most students (young and old!) learn fast this way; and... is there any teacher of Maori who could NOT make good use of this program?
3) M-CAL. Learning the days, months and seasons in Maori becomes an easy matter with this practical drill program, which some children enjoy just as much as if it were a game!
4) M-VOCAB. A Maori vocabulary training program which checks the student's progress letter by letter and gives instant feedback, M-VOCAB comes supplied with SIX standard vocabulary files which contain the majority of the words used in MAORI BILLION, many of which are required learning for eventual School Certificate candidates. M-VOCAB also enables the user to file new lists of Maori words and their English equivalents to disc, ready for FURTHER vocabulary drill on the program at any convenient time!
5) M-PLUS. For those who seek practice in both Maori and mental arithmetic, this program provides the opportunity for both at the same time. M-PLUS invents THOUSANDS of simple addition sums at random, presents them on screen in Maori, and calls on the student to provide an answer in Maori - such as maybe RUA TEKAU MAA TAHI. Makes learning fun!
6) M-MINUS. This program invents thousands of simple minus sums entirely at random gives them to the student in Maori and asks the student to answer them in Maori. Any student who has mastered the program M-COUNT on EDUCATOR-A is ready for both this program and M-PLUS.
7) M-LOCATE. Without the ability to express concepts of location, one is well and truly lost in any language. This program drills students in 30 different Maori expressions of location.
8) M-VERB-1. Anyone who has ever even tried to learn Maori will know that the Maori verb with its inceptive, perfective and continuative aspects, its special ways of indicating past, present and future tenses, and its very special ways of emphasising the doer of the action where appropriate, can present serious obstacles for some beginners. With this program to help, the challenge of mastering all these complexities can soon become rather like an exciting and compelling game!
9) M-VERB-2. The PASSIVE VOICE is the mainsail of the Maori verb, and the correct passive form for every verb just has to be learned. This program drills students in the passive voice of 3O frequently occurring Maori verbs.
10) M-VERB-3. Specially formed VERBAL NOUNS (or gerunds, as they are sometimes called) are an extremely frequent feature of Maori sentence structure. Ability to form gerunds is therefore an important language skill for any student of Maori. M-VERB-3 coaches students in the development of this skill.
