EDUCATOR-B PROGRAMS FOR
IBM-COMPATIBLE COMPUTERS
E-2O) SUBTRACT. If your child is experiencing any difficulty with
longer subtraction sums or has maybe not yet started these at school, this
program merits your attention. It offers the student a choice of four
different levels of difficulty, and - in case you yourself are puzzled
about the way in which many schools now handle subtractions, the program
also offers you and your children a choice of methods. Whether you opt
for the old method or the new for your children to learn by, the program
can generate at random literally thousands of different subtraction sums
for your children to practise on, and will monitor their progress at every
turn - audio-visually; i.e. both with sound cues and with on-screen messages.
The insistent but helpful supervision provided by your computer througout this
program is just what most children need to associate themselves with the effort,
and if you like to keep an eye on your children's progress, their
percentage score appears on screen at the end of each run.
E-21) GEOGRAPHY-1. This program drills students in the capital cities of
Europe, checking spelling all the way, as it goes through thirty-eight capitals
and countries!
E-22) GEOGRAPHY-2. This program aims to inculcate the names of thirty-eight
capitals and countries of Asia, and it makes sure that the student can spell
them all correctly too!
E-23) GEOGRAPHY-3. This program aims to teach the names of fifty states and
capitals of the USA, monitoring spelling as it goes.
E-25) AVOIR . The verb TO HAVE is one of the first hurdles which every
beginner in French has to leap. Fortunately, with the help of your
computer, plus this very thorough drill program, the problem
rapidly disappears. Immediate audio-visual monitoring of all input from
the student not only ensures accelerated learning of the present tense
of this major irregular French verb, but also makes learning a real
pleasure for most students.
E-26) LONG-ADD. A primary school program, which devises thousands of
long-addition sums at random, and drills the learner step-by-step in their
solution by the British method - as taught in most New Zealand schools.
E-27) ALLER. The present tense of the French verb TO GO used to be a hard
one to master for many beginners in French. With the help of this program,
plus your own friendly computer, the difficulty very soon disappears!
E-28) FR-COUNT. This is a drill program on the first steps of counting in
FRENCH, which facilitates rapid progress by immediate audio-visual monitoring
of any errors the student may make, plus immediate visual and auditory
confirmation of every correct entry.
E-3O) TRIPLE. It is important for students who are taking public exams in
Mathematics to be able to recognise groups of numbers which are related to one
another by the Pythagorean Formula. These groups of numbers are known as
Pythagorean Triples. The program TRIPLE aims to provide the user with
plenty of practice in the recognition of Pythagorean Triples.
E-31) GEOG-4. This program inculcates the names of the countries
and capitals of North, South and Central America, and the West Indies. It
makes sure the student can SPELL the countries and capitals correctly too!
E-32) QUAD. Generates quadratic equations and guides secondary school
students (and others!) to their solution in easy-to-understand steps, by
the factorisation method, The program will operate either in
demonstration mode (so that even complete beginners can get the idea) or
in interactive mode. With this program to monitor every input, many
children soon find learning to handle quadratics a fascinating
intellectual experience.
E-33) QUAD-2. Carries on where QUAD leaves off. Whilst QUAD aims to
drill students in the solution of quadratics with positive factors,
QUAD-2 aims to extend the range of quadratics covered to include equations
with NEGATIVE factors and COMBINATIONS of negative and positive factors.
For students who have mastered QUAD, QUAD-2 is the next major step.
E-34) SIMUL. This program originates THOUSANDS af pairs of simultaneous
equations and guides the user to their solution in step-by-step fashion.
For students with little or no knowledge of Algebra, the program can be
run in demonstration mode - demonstrating example upon example; and as
soon as they begin to get the hang of it, they can switch the program to
interactive mode, and begin to play a part in solving the equations,
with immediate audio-visual monitoring of all input at every step.
E-35) FRACT. This one program introduces the young student to COMMON
FRACTIONS sums of all four types - addition, subtraction, division and
multiplication. The program generates at random an enormous number of
sums of this type, and leads the student to the answers in a systematic,
step-by-step manner.
E-36) EURO-ADD. This is a long-addition program which trains the user in the
easier-to-learn THREE-STEP method of long addition - sub-totalling, indentation and totalling.
This involves fewer and smaller carries than the traditional British method of long addition,
which is still taught in most New Zealand schools and also in the program, LONG-ADD.
E-37) G-COUNT. A simple drill in the first steps of counting in German,
which enables most beginners to make rapid progress.
E-38) PHYSICS. Aims at inculcating a knowledge of BOYLE'S LAW on
the relationshlp between pressure and volume in gases. The program can be
run either in demonstration mode or interactively.
E-39) PHYSICS2. Guides the student towards a clear understanding of
CHARLES' LAW, concerning the relationship between temperature and volume
in gases. The program can be operated either interactively or in
demonstration mode - whichever best suits the user's needs.
E-61) AVERAGES. This program uses series of random numbers to teach the
calculation of the mean average; i.e. the arithmetic mean. The program
will operate in demonstration mode as well as interactive mode, so
that students who are unsure how to begin working out averages themselves
have endless guidance available ... and so that, as they gain insight, they can try out
their newly acquired knowledge as much as they wish, knowing that the
computer will monitor their efforts at every stage and report back to them
immediately on every input.
E-65) AUSTGEOG. The title of the program is simply an abbreviation
for Australian Geography, and it deals with Australian towns and their states.
Probably most children in both Australia and New Zealand know that Sydney is
located in New South Wales, but fewer know in which state Whyalla or Wyndham
can be found. This program is an interactive drill on the location of
seventy Australian towns.
