MEATIA O WHAKAARO KI TE REO MAORI: ME PEHEA TE TANGOTANGO!
THINK MAORI: HOW TO USE IT!
The purpose of this Maori Language tuition computer CD is quite simply to help the user to think in Maori. The CD is divided into three main sections: (1) basic pronunciation exercises; (2) Maori Language stories and essays; and (3) - most important of all - eighteen interactive Maori Language question-and-answer exercises with oral drill options.
Most students in their first three years of Maori will benefit from practising the basic sounds of Maori with the preliminary basic pronunciation exercises which begin this course.
Maori is not a completely phonetic language. This makes it important to begin by looking at each sentence of Maori in these exercises displayed on screen as you hear it being read aloud; so it is a good idea to select the text display option.
When you feel you are becoming accustomed to the sound of the sentences, run the preliminary pronunciation exercises again - this time selecting the text display option plus the option to say the sentences aloud in Maori yourself after the computer.
If you are an absolute beginner and do not know
what the sentences in these exercises mean, just click the
translate button whenever you hear a sentence you cannot
understand, and a translation will then appear on screen for you.
It is important that you aim to remember the meanings of the
sentences so that you can dispense with the need for translation
and understand the Maori automatically as you hear it ... and it
is particularly important that you should understand completely
the meaning of the things you hear and say in Maori,
before (and not after) you dispense with translation!
When you reach the stage where you feel that
you understand all the sentences in the preliminary pronunciation
exercises, and that you can pronounce them all correctly, you
need to hear them without looking at the text; so run the
exercises again, this time without selecting the text display
option. When you feel that understanding the sentences without
the text in front of you is no problem, you are ready to move on
to the stories and essays.
These consist of 10 passages of continuous Maori prose. Begin listening to these with the text automatically highlighted in front of you on the monitor screen. If there is material in these Maori passages which you do not understand, run the passage again after using the computer program's translation option to ascertain the meaning of words, phrases and sentences you cannot understand.
After a while, switch the program to manual highlight mode and highlight each sentence yourself as you hear it read aloud. Keep listening to the stories in conjunction with this program until you can understand every phrase as you hear it, without recourse to translation.
Then, start from the beginning again, and listen to the stories and essays, etc., selecting the sound only option. When you have mastered that too, you will have already developed quite a good ear for Maori, and you will be ready to tackle the interactive audio-lingual question-&-answer exercises.
These interactive exercises call on you to construct answers in Maori aloud, and also to formulate questions aloud in order to elicit various items of information. Before responding to the interactive exercises in this way, it is a good idea to use this program to have them appear on your monitor screen initially, and to key in the required responses so that your computer can check them out. Therefore just select the 'written drill option' to begin with.
Should you need to see translations, these are available at a click of the mouse at this stage. Begin responding to the Maori sentences aloud, even while you are using the 'Written Drill Option' with the Maori exercises displayed on screen sentence by sentence.
Eventually, when you have worked your way
through the question-&-answer exercises with the 'Written
Drill Option' on, your command of spoken Maori should be growing
strong enough for you to attempt these exercises without text
display, so at that stage select the 'Oral Drill Option'.
When you can manage that too, you will have already made quite an inroad into Maori thinking territory!
