Latest news!!
We have been in discussion with our District Commissioner and Ohui-a-Rangi Sea Scout Group at Half Moon Bay. The position is that we are able to use this hall for our weekly meetings and store our gear in this building.
Ohui-A-Rangi are shifting their operation to Farm Cove. A new facility incorporating Pakuranga Sailing and Mariners is being built there at the moment and this should be completed mid to late September. The Ohui-A-Rangi site is required for the expansion of the ferry terminal so we have use of this building on a month-to-month basis until the site is required.
It is hoped that we can resume our programme from this hall starting Monday week (4th Aug)
Cleanup.
Our objective this weekend (26th - 27th) is
to identify the extent of the damage to our gear and memorabilia. We will have
items that are beyond repair. We will have items that need to be professionally
cleaned. The remaining gear we can look after ourselves.
The biggest problem seems to be smoke film
that has coated every item in the main hall.
How Parents can help.
Leaders and committee will make an assessment on Saturday and sort into the three catagories mentioned above.
We would ask if parents could call down
Sunday 9.30 am to 11.30 or so, and collect some gear to take home and clean.
This may involve items to put through a dishwasher or washing machine, a wipe
over with a cloth or whatever. The damage and lack of power at the ship has made
cleaning there out of the question. Also some items (e.g. tent bags) will need
time to dry before being put away. If everyone does a little it becomes very
simple, and it solves a storage problem until we can shift into our new
temporary premises. We would ask parents to store these items for the week and
hopefully deliver them to Ohui-A-Rangi the following weekend – more on this
later.
Our Venturer Advisor, Judith Bright and
Carol Henry have taken control of memorabilia. They both have expertise in this
field and can hopefully restore some of the items that have been badly damaged.
Some items in their damaged form may just have to be accepted and become part of
our history.
Support.
Cubs and Keas - Monday 28th July we will meet at the ship at 6.30pm for approx 3/4 hours. The fire service will be there and cubs and keas can have a look the damage and ask any questions. No uniform this night, dress warm and bring a torch. Cubs - don't worry about the dress up gear and masks you were asked to bring along. We may have to change the programme at short notice so the movie night may not happen.
Scouts - Monday 28th July will replace Wednesdays programme. Meet at the ship 7.30pm for approx 3/4 hours to view damage and discuss programme options for the term.
Please check back regulary to this page for updates. We will try and keep everyone informed as much as possible.
