PINEWOOD DERBY 2002
|
||
About
Pinewood derby originated in the States in 1953. Each year over 1 million cars are made and raced buy cub packs and youth groups throughout the world. Our group has run the event three times before again we are combining resources with other local youth groups, Trinity Cub Pack and Adventure Life. The combined total of cars built by the three groups will exceed 250. We will have our own race structure and our own race night but will share equipment and facilities. Test day will be open to all members of the three groups.
Construction
Each cub and scout will be given a block of wood, 4 axles, 4 wheels, and a Rule Book. The Rule Book will have each cubs allocated number which must be displayed on car. To avoid disappointment read and follow the rules carefully. The idea is for cubs and scouts (with parent help) to form the wood into a race vehicle of their own design. They choose the class they wish to run in and make their derby entry accordingly. Please encourage imagination a racing type car is fine and very acceptable but other designs can add to the fun and spectacle of the event. For example a car may be in the form of a coffin, chest of draws, refrigerator, tube of toothpaste, surfboard, ship or boat, calculator, radio, couch, bed, the list can go on and on. As long as the finished product conforms to all the rules for that class thats fine.
The Track
The race track is about 10m long and is elevated approx 1.2 metres at one end. The car sits on the track and straddles a guide so that it stays in lane clearances and dimensions are important so that the car clears the track, other cars and timing gear - any added weight must stay within the limits. Timing is from the top to bottom and is all electronic.
A limited number or cars
(at $10.00 each) are available to parents if they wish to build and race their
own. They will however be racing against the leaders, so if you feel you are up
to the challenge ..........
