Devotion rewarded

By Catherine Couch

Templeton's Bev Jones' devotion to theCanterbury Judo Area Association was recognised recently when she was awarded administrator of the year.
This is the fourth time she has received the award, and the third year running, in her eight years as secretary.

Jones' involvement in the sport goes back 29 years when her late husband used to travel from Chertsey to Christchurch to take part. "I used to come up to Christchurch two or three days a week and I got hooked on it," she said.

She became involved in the association and some time later was asked to take up the position of secretary. "It gave me an interest at a time when you need something to help you along with life.

"I enjoyed meeting different people and the friendships and I like to be there for the players. The players come first. If it wasn't for the players we wouldn't have the sport."

In her time as secretary she has been involved in fundraising for top Canterbury players and helped to arrange partial funding for five players to travel to New Caledonia for the 2004 Oceania Judo Championships.

"It was satisfying to think I did something to help the players.

"It (the trophy) means that people recognise what we do and it's nice to feel that your work doesn't go unnoticed," she said.

Judo success runs in the Jones family, as both Bev's husband and son have represented New Zealand in the sport and her son made the short list of athletes to go to the Olympic Games in Athens.
She also took up the poition of president earlier this year.
