What have I been doing in 2003??
I have now completed a full-time Diploma course in Computer Networking at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology. It is based on the Cisco Networking Academy courses. Here is a link to one of my Threaded Case Studies. I sat the CCNA 640-607 exam this year and passed with 975/1000. I did some work for TelstraClear, Dec2002-Feb2003. I now have a full-time contract with Trike Technologies as an IT Tutor.
Our Backup Service is now available with the recent addition of two parallel port tape drives. We are now able to do on-site backups to tape, then transfer to CD-ROM with our CD Writer, if necessary.
Wingate & MDaemon. SOS Computing is able to supply licences for both Wingate, the award winning proxy server and firewall software package, & MDaemon; software mail server. Both of these packages are excellent software solutions for homes and small businesses. For more information check the Wingate website: http://www.wingate.co.nz
Recently I have been evaluating the
Linux
operating
system as an alternative to Windoze. So far I have been impressed. Linux
Mandrake 9.0 or Caldera
OpenLinux.
We have been involved with removal of
Viruses, Trojans & Worms on customer systems, and have some valuable
experience and resources in this field. If you need help with virus & trojan
protection or recovery, get in touch. By keeping your internet and virus scanning
software up to date you will protect yourself from the latest round of "nasties".
The recent KLEZ and variants is a particularly nasty one. Keep your virus scanner
up to date.
Remember: DO NOT OPEN AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT DIRECTLY....Save
the file to your Hard Disk (eg My Documents), then virus scan, then open.
Another tip is to turn off the "preview" window in Outlook Express
(or Outlook)
Privacy & Security continues to be
a concern among serious Net users. It has been discovered that several pieces
of shareware and a number of popular sites monitor our Internet activities and
send this information back to the marketing companies concerned.
The FBI's Carnivore is on the loose -- and your e-mail could be its next meal.
I am planning a new page on this topic, coming soon. In the mean time check
these links.

Our Public Access Internet facility with four terminals continues to be popular, providing travellers, visitors and Ski field staff with access to their Email and the Internet.

Computer technology is still advancing at high speed and 2Ghz CPU's are becoming available. The price is expected to fall as the new Pentium IV's become popular. The AMD K7 Duron has proved to be a very cost effective alternative to the Pentium II but has come to the end of it's life. The K7 Athlon XP is available up to 3.0Ghz. Recent SOS Performer systems have been built using the +1Ghz K7's, an AGP graphics card, and motherboard running at up to 266Mhz. - Producing great performance without breaking the budget |
