This block is designed to hold the rails of flexible track while they are
trimmed to length.
It is not intended to be a track gauge, as it holds the rails at about
0.1mm out of gauge while pressure is applied to create a firm grip. Proprietry
tracks have a rail head width of between 0.8 mm and 1.1mm.
A large hole is provided which enables track pinning to be accomplished
with the guide in place.
When soldering wires to the rail, this block can be placed 25 - 50mm from
the site to act as a heat sink to reduce the chances of melting the sleepers.
The aluminium is not affected by normal solders, but may be affected by
some fluxes if not washed off. Be sure to remove the guide from the track
before attempting to run trains.
To obtain reliable running from your models, the wheels must be accurately
spaced.
This gauge will enable you to correct badly adjusted wheels, without other
special tools.
Often the wheels come from the manufacturer set "near enough",
but many items will derail regularly, particularly over point- work which
is also made "near enough". To operate rolling stock with varying
wheel standards on the same track, the wheels need to be carefully set
to match the type of track in use. Therefore each type will need its own
gauge. Use the correct gauge made especially for your particular models.
Railway wheel guiding action is quite complex in operation. On straight
track, the function of the flanges is easily seen, but the action over
point-work is less obvious. The "check" or "guide-rails"
of the point, pull the back of the flange to keep the opposite wheel clear
of the gaps, and consequent derailment. The most important dimension of
a wheel- set is the distance from one flange back to the opposing wheel's
flange front or face. If all wheel sets conform to a suitable standard,
trouble free operation will be achieved.
This is a difficult dimension to measure with the tools available to the
"average modeller". Much easier to measure is the dimension from
flange rear, to flange rear, also known as the "back-to-back"
distance. The back-to-back measurement is only of importantance if it is
wildly out of place, as the wheels will then catch on the facing point
blades. The important dimension of flange back to the opposite flange face
is the combination of "back-to-back" plus the flange width. As
different manufacturers use various standards, the simplest method of correcting
wheel-sets with a "back-to- back" gauge requires a separate gauge
for each profile. Fortunately, track and pointwork from the various manufacturers
from Europe, the USA and England conforms to an acceptable degree, including
the latest small profile rail. The deeper flanges of some older models
will touch the rail fastenings of these tracks, however. Maerklin and Trix
Express have their own standards for wheels and track.
NEM European Standard. 14.3mm.
The various European Manufacturers do not produce wheels which precisely
conform to their intended standards. The higher priced models tend to be
correct while the cheaper ranges have larger flanges, requiring the flanges
to be set closer together. This gauge is designed to suit all the common
wheel types produced for 2 rail running from Europe, but not Britain. British
proprietry models can be set using the NEM gauge. The most recent products
from Liliput may be best adjusted with the NMRA RP25 gauge.
NMRA RP25 Standard. 14.39mm
3/16 NZR Wheel Setting Gauge.
The NMRA wheel and track standards are widely used in the USA. The
wheels operate well and are usually consistant to standard. The finer scale
British wheels are made for operation on Peco track, and have a back to
back measurement of about 14.8mm. Such wheels from Jackson, Ratio, Maygib
and Midland - Line need careful setting to a closer tolerance, to operate
properly with other wheel standards.
Hornby Standards - 14.0mm.
LIMA British. 14.2mm
British Models Fine Wheels. 14.8mm
There are no official standards for British models. Triang-Hornby have
little by little increased the original spacing from 12.75mm to 13.5mm
for the square axle wagon wheels. Current models are set at about 14 mm.
The finer scale British wheels are made for operation on Peco track, and
have a back to back measurement of about 14.8mm. The 15mm dimension quoted
is for use with tighter point clearances. Such wheels from Jackson, Ratio,
and Maygib need careful setting to a closer tolerance, to operate properly
with other wheel standards. Recent British proprietry models can be set
using the NEM gauge. British fine scale wheels require a larger back-to-back
measurement than NEM to operate on Peco and similar trackwork. EM and Proto
4 etc. standard wheels are to a differing track gauge from HO 16.5mm and
are generally not compatible.
MAERKLIN HO. 13.75mm and 14.2mm
Maerklin wheels were coarser in the 1950's with a Back to back of 13.70mm.
This matches the inner step of the gauge. The wheels have been refined
over the years until the latest blackened wheels, which now measure 14.2
mm matching the second step of the gauge. Models of the intermediate years
should just clear the center step.
Electrotren and Hag produce to the same wheel and track standards.
The gauges consist of a machined length of aluminium with a small step to give maximum and minimum dimensions. The "Promodel" gauges are designed to slide between the wheel flanges, until the step touches the flange. The back-to-back measurement is then within tolerances. Hold the wheels to be checked towards a lamp or window and lower the gauge between the wheels parallel to the axle. The clearances will be seen more easily in silhouette. If the gauge drops between the wheels, they must be brought closer together. If the wheel does not drop on to the step of the gauge, the wheels must be moved apart. Remove wagon or coach wheels from the model and gently twist them, while pushing or pulling as is appropriate. Re-check with the wheel gauge and repeat until correct. Check also that the axle ends extend about equally from both sides. Wheels are sometimes not seated accurately on their axles. Check the wheel spacing at 2 or 3 points around the circumference.

This basic hand-held controller provides a variable output voltage from
your 16 volt-24 volt transformer or the "accessory" connections
of your existing controller.* The controller's basis is an "Industry
Standard" voltage regulator which has built-in overload limiting,
short circuit and temperature cut-out. The output of the controller is
similar in wave-form to a resistance controller, but has a controlled voltage
to overcome "Jack rabbit" starts and stops. The slight pulse
overcomes sticky motors, but is suitable for "N" scale motors
which will overheat when operated by "pulse" controllers.
The maximum output is 12 volts at 1 amp when powered from the 16 volt AC
output sockets of a transformer of that amperage. Recommended is the New
Zealand made "Fidelity" brand transformer with two 1 Amp outputs.
Suitable second-hand transformers include: Hammant & Morgan, Marklin,
Triang (NZ), Scalextric. Look for: 16 Volts or higher and 1 Amp or 16 VA
ratings. Maximum current output will be limited to the lower rating of
controller or transformer. The maximum output voltage is set at 12 volts.
Many cheap controllers provide 15 volts at light load, which is above the
maximum recommended for the motors and light bulbs. Locomotives will not
run as fast with this controller. Under load, the metal casing of this
controller will give off a gentle heat. This is allowed for in the design
and is normal. The controller will turn off for short periods if the loading
is excessive. (If the casing is opened at any time, ensure the cable is
placed clear of the internal heat-sink on reassembly)
*Note: When this controller is powered from the "accessory" output
of your controller, the outputs should feed separate sections of the railway
which have been isolated from each other at both rails.

652. THE PROMODEL CARD-ORDER SYSTEM. all scales.
Add some additional interest to your goods train operation, with this
card-order operating system.
The system is based upon the articles published in the US magazine "MODEL
RAILROADER" from time to time. The last description was published
in the March 1993 edition.
The system is equally applicable to NZR modelling, or any other country,
as it is to the USA.
Cards are provided for each wagon, and "Way-bills" for every
required movement of goods or empty wagon stock transfer.
A small box with 3 compartments for;
The block of cards is moved on one compartment each session. A single compartment may be found sufficient for a siding.
WAGON CARDS:
Each wagon (car) is allocated its own permanent card. A basic description
of the wagon is filled in with the prototype information & visual appearance
described at the top of the form. Below the center are spaces for information
relating to the model. This model information will of course be covered
by the way-bill when in use. Further model details such as manufacturer
and catalogue number can be added on the rear of the card where they are
readily seen.
Each wagon type can be allocated a colour code to speed operation of the
system, for example:
Fold the bottom part of the card upwards and fold the tabs behind and fix
them with glue or tape.
WAYBILLS:
The Way-bills are intended to give a variety of workings for each wagon.
The information entered on each section will direct the railway operator
to collect the wagon from its current position, and arrange it in a train
to another destination. Obviously you will need to have more than one siding
on your layout or the destination will always be the same. However, do
not overlook the possibilities such as coal wagons or oil tankers to the
locomotive siding. Occassional supplies of brake blocks, oil, filters and
other items will mean the sending of a box van to the same siding from
time to time.
If you have only one yard, trains could be made up for an imaginary destination,
a different destination listed on the turn of each way bill. The effect
would be to create a different combination of wagons each trip.
Each way-bill has four sections, each of which should be turned up in sequence
after use. The last destination on side 4 should be the same as the origin
on side 1, so that the sequence will be continuous.
Obtain the "Model Roadroader" article to get further ideas on
the best use of the system.

size for improved appearance.
-can be used with a between the rails magnet for uncoupling or with the
standard mechanical uncoupling ramp.
-retains the pre-uncoupled feature.
-is NEM compatible. (Couples with almost all European Std. couplers.)
-is Maerklin KK and Roco KK Mk4. compatible.
-is simple to fit. No alteration to the Maerklin product is required, beyond
the exchange of the loop component and the coupler can be converted back
to the original type for re-sale as original.
available as:
Replacement loop for Maerklin coupler head. 50stk.
9/10.1. Complete coupler. (not yet avaliable, under negotiation with Maerklin).
9/10.3. A range of etched loops to improve appearance and NEM compatibility
of most European makes is ready for production. These replacements have
the pre-uncouple feature and the capability of being magnetically operated.
They are not KK couplers.
Etched brass KK mechanism with NEM coupler pocket for fitting to proprietary
models.
This mechanism is activated only by the couplers angle, relative to the
vehicle, not by the tractive load as are other systems.
It is suitable for any length wagon or coach, the limit being a 20 degree
angle between wagon and coupler. This is sufficient to accommodate 305mm
coaches on 360mm radius curves, if you must.
Dimensions: Length: 15.5mm not including pocket. Width: 19.0mm maximum.
Depth: 1.5mm
Either screw or glue mounting is practical, against a flattened area under the chassis, or alternatively on the top of the chassis with a hole for the pocket mounting to pass through.
The Promodel HO range of wheels have been developed to upgrade the appearance of proprietry models and for "2 railing" Maerklin products:

The wheel diameter must be chosen to suit the particular item of rolling
stock.
The various manufacturers tend to use standard sizes from their parts bins,
rather than the correct size, so often a compromise must be made between
the scale size and one that "looks right".
In general, older styles of rolling stock used 1 metre diameter or 3 foot
diameter wheels (11.5mm and 12mm for HO scale) while modern stock uses
slightly smaller diameters. 970mm (11.15mm in HO scale)
Worn wheels are re-turned to about 50mm/2inches smaller before being scrapped.
Tip: Where axles are tight in plastic axle-boxes, squeeze across the
axle boxes with finger and thumb while rolling the wheels along your hand
once or twice. This will give free rolling wheels.
*Z: requires RP25 wheels to be pressed onto the original axles. This
can be done by us at the time of purchase for a small extra charge.
