On the 6th February 1840 when the Treaty was signed, there were two very different versions.  A  Maori text  which the Maori Chiefs signed (Modern day translation of Maori text)  and an  English Verison which was not an accurate translation of that Maori chiefs had signed.   In the Maori version sovereignty was retained and in the English version Sovereignty was given away.
